Do you need Microsoft Office to survive at college?

I prefer to use iWork 06 from Apple.

well. how versatile is it? i would assume you would have to transfer your files to other lab stations? or do you have your own printer as well? if so, then using whichever program you like might be up to you. but if you WONT have your own printer, iwork isnt compatible with windows computers...

however, you may need microsoft office to download certain files.

so i would say, try YOUR program out at first... then if it comes to a point where you're inconvienenced, buy a disk and instal microsoft office.

MO is the worlds leader. Most places use Access, Excel and Front Page.

You also need to learn Power Point, that's a hot item.
It may depend on the kinds of classes you will be taking, but consider situations like these:

- If your professor wants you to submit your essay in an MS Word file, he's not necessarily going to make an exception just for you.

- If you're working on a group project and everyone else in your group is using MS Word, you're going to be dragging everyone else down.

- Some classes where you have to give presentations require you to use PowerPoint, just so you can get experience using the software (because it is what most businesses will be using)

If you're creative maybe you can figure out some alternative solutions...like making friends with someone who has MS Word and using his/her computer when you need to.
What you need is to be on the same page as everyone else. If MS Office is the de facto standard at your school, you'd better get used to it. Think of it this way: if you started a job and the entire office used MS, you'd switch, right?
you need Microsoft... the end...
