Yeah, Office 07 uses a new format, .docx whereas a normal 2003 document (as on XP) will use .doc

On Vista, click save As on the document, and then in file type find the normal .doc listing. Alternatively, from Microsofts download site, you can get a compatibility pack for Office 2003 that will let it read the newer .docx files.

This is to do with the version of Office you are using on these machines, not the version of Windows itself.

Have you got Office 2007 installed on the Vista machine by any chance?

If so, you are probably saving it in the default file type for Office 2007, which is .docx

Earlier versions of Office cannot open this format, unless you download the compatibility pack for earlier versions.

My advice would be to save the document in an earlier version format via the "Save as" option. Save it as a .doc %26 you will be fine on your XP machine.

Hope it helps.
what error messages are there? if its office 07 and then you trying to use word 2003 it wont work because its not compatabel.
Is Microsoft Word installed on the other pc? If it is is it an older version than the one you created the document in? It may be saved in a format that the older version doesn't recognise.
If the Vista PC has Office 2007 and the XP PC an earlier version of Office then the problem is because Office 2007 saves files in a different format.

Either, in Office 2007, save as an earlier version of document onto the USB stick,

OR download the compatibility software from Microsoft to allow the earlier Word to read the later format:
