Well, your employer or school may offer it for free or at a reduced price. Do you absolutely need Microsoft Office, though?

There are plenty of alternatives that are free and work just fine, able to replicate most of the functionality of Office.

An example is OpenOffice.org - it comes with almost everything the pricey Office does for free.

I'm assuming you have a Windows PC, of course. And one last thing - if you're sharing files with someone else, be sure to save in the Microsoft Office format. It'll give you the option when you're saving to do it in OpenOffice's own format (.odt) or the Microsoft Office XP format (.doc for text) on the bottom right of the save window.

Microsoft Office can only understand its own format, while OpenOffice can understand both.
