How to use Microsoft Office Excel 2007?

How do you make one row go all the way across your table, but then have the row under it be split into multiple columns? I'm a first time user of Microsoft Excel and I'm really not sure how to use it. All help is appreciated.

for the first row...highlight all the cells that you want to be one and select merge.



the rows below will remain in the multiple columns
