Microsoft Officce programs have an option to save them with a password, so they can't be modified. Is it possible to discover a (good) password with any kind of software?

Programs like this crack password by trying A LOT of different passwords. They can try every possible combination of characters (known as "brute force"), but the possibilities are astronomical... what you really have to worry about is the common passwords. Most cracker programs just try a few hundred of the most common passwords, then give up.

So, make your password something long, obscure and random and include special characters. You'll have to write it down some where to remember though, and it can always be lost. One option is using a complete sentence, some obscure statement that you will remember but could never be thought of by a cracker.

Unfortunately it is dead easy, there are several programs that use brute force, some are more sophisticated, and know what to look for.

These guys sell a series of programs to break your lost passwords for all kinds of programs.

The Passware programs may not be cheap, but are better than loosing your info.

The best password are letters, numbers, and characters, and should be a minimum of 8 chars, and not use a system. This will prevent a lot of the brute force crackers that just use a dictionary, and common words/phrases people use like "IAMGOD".
